hallo!
I am francesco and I am from North Italy
I have a sdrive30i, tiefseeblau with beige leder.

have you ever heard an engine like that?

http://gallery.me.com/lusebra#100072

this is my scenario:
start engine , rev counter is at 1100 rpm,no ticking
after a while engine slow down to 6-700 rpm, start this ticking noise....
I go on the road and after 1 km the ticking noise is gone.when the engine is warm, no noise whatsoever...
the ticking noise comes near the front of the head, near vanos and distribution chain ....
opinions?
thank you and sorry but my german is quite poor....
viele danke und grusse,
Franecsco

Francesco - I have seen a few threads on the tapping noise in the 3.0 motor, apparently due to air being trapped, the fix was for the dealer to bleed the vanos system to get the air out, this sounds similar. Some of the British forums say that driving the car hard sometimes settles to problem but most agree a trip to the dealer is needed as if it is not trapped air then there may be a problem with the vanos solenoid.

hello Franecsco,
unfortunately runs your clip only with Quick Time. I don't use it. In this case I couldn't hear it.

But never the less, it seems, that may be one or more valve pestles are ticking in case that the oil is not warm enough and the engine is slowing down to 700 rpm. Under these conditions the oil pressure for the pestles is not high enough to keep the valve clearance to the correct clearance. After the engine oil is warm this phenomenon will be gone. Asked your BMW Dealer if this is in your case unusual or not. I know a lot of engines from different manufactures with this "problem", but it is normally not serious.

my video is not really clear due to backgrond noise and the wall of garage, rebounding and amplifying the normal engine sound....
anyway:

got back the car yesterday,
bmw knows this problem, they called it "comfort decrease issue",so the car is ok despite the ticking noise when cold, when my car will be serviced they will fix the problem(still not solved , but bmw is triyng to eliminate it as soon as possible...), no recalls at the moment.
